Funding Priorities and Grant Guidelines

Projects supported under the Jack Kimmel International Grant Program are expected to be completed within one to two years, with grant awards of up to $10,000 available for successful applicants. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis, and a project may receive support from this program only once.

For the 2026 funding cycle, TREE Fund has identified three specific priority areas for research. Proposals must focus on at least one of the following themes to be considered for funding:

  • Arboriculture: Theory and Practice – including topics such as pruning, fertilization, climbing techniques, and related arboricultural practices.
  • Tree Health – research aimed at improving understanding, diagnosis, management, and prevention of tree health issues.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation – including studies related to decay, structural integrity, hazard evaluation, and risk management of trees.

Letters of Inquiry that do not align with these priority areas will not advance to the next stage of the review process. TREE Fund welcomes applications from a broad range of academic and technical disciplines and encourages both qualitative and quantitative research approaches.

Projects Not Eligible for Funding

TREE Fund does not support the following types of projects:

  • Grants awarded directly to individuals.
  • Municipal tree inventory, survey, or assessment projects.
  • Tree planting initiatives.
  • Research focused primarily on traditional forestry, timber production, agroforestry, or the conservation and ecology of natural forest ecosystems.
  • Product testing projects designed mainly to benefit the manufacturer of a commercial product.

Reporting and Publication Requirements

TREE Fund is committed to ensuring that funded research findings are broadly accessible to practitioners, researchers, and stakeholders who can benefit from the results. While recognizing the importance of academic publication timelines, the organization encourages recipients to actively share their findings through journals, conferences, and professional forums.

Grant recipients should:
  • Notify TREE Fund whenever research findings are published or presented.
  • Acknowledge TREE Fund’s financial support in all publications, reports, and presentations arising from the funded project.
  • Make reasonable efforts to disseminate research outcomes to the wider arboriculture and urban forestry community.

Researchers are strongly encouraged to publish their work in reputable professional and scientific journals related to arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture, plant pathology, sustainability, environmental planning, and urban ecosystems to maximize the impact of their findings.
