Overview

Award Amount

Eligibility
To be eligible for the APARRI Working Group Grant, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The Working Group Leader or Coordinator must hold a doctoral degree and have a formal affiliation with a higher education institution.
- Independent scholars and graduate students may participate as members of the working group.
- Each working group must have at least three members.
- No more than two members of a working group may be affiliated with the same institution.
- The proposed project must focus on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) religions.
- Individuals who have previously received a Working Group Grant as the Working Group Leader cannot apply again as the Leader. However, they may participate as a member of another proposed working group.
- An individual may be included in only one working group proposal.
The program encourages, but does not require, the following:
- Including independent scholars, graduate students, and other non-faculty participants in the working group.
- Holding meetings in person.
- Developing interdisciplinary, interethnic, and interreligious collaborations.
- Submitting a proposal that includes one or two working group members presenting at the APARRI conference.
Application Guidelines
All applications must be submitted online and should include the following materials:
- Online application form
- Project proposal of no more than five pages, double-spaced, using 11-point Times New Roman font. The page limit includes footnotes and endnotes.
- The proposal should include the following sections:
- Title
- Working Group Members, identifying the Primary Contact
- Abstract of no more than 350 words
- Goals
- Significance of the Project
- Description of the Project
- Product/Deliverable
- Timeline
- Budget and, where applicable, other potential sources of funding, along with a budget justification. The budget section may be up to two pages.
- Curriculum Vitae for each working group member, limited to two pages per person
- Letter from a financial administrator at the applicant’s institution confirming their willingness to administer and support the subaward
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be assessed based on the following considerations:
- The extent to which the proposed project can advance scholarly and public understanding of AAPI religions and their relationship to democracy, particularly by bringing attention to groups that are underrepresented in the field.
- The feasibility of the proposed project and the likelihood that the working group will successfully produce a tangible final outcome.
- The potential of the project to encourage interdisciplinary, interethnic, and interreligious perspectives and collaboration.
What the Grant Covers
Eligible Expenses
Grant funds may be used for eligible project-related expenses, including:
- Travel, meals, and lodging for working group meetings, including meetings held at retreat centers, hotels, or conference centers
- Participation stipends of up to $500 per working group member
- Honoraria and travel-related expenses for invited guest speakers
- Equipment, supplies, and materials needed to support working group meetings and discussions
Expenses Not Covered
The following expenses are not eligible for grant funding:
- Computers, tablets, and office furniture
- Food delivered to participants’ homes or meals consumed during online meetings
- Stipends or payments for preparing the grant application
- Wi-Fi or other household utility expenses
- Travel, meals, or accommodation expenses for family members, friends, or other accompanying individuals
- Travel expenses associated with attending disciplinary or professional conferences, including the APARRI conference
