Application Invited 2026 Grants for Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative in United States of America (USA)
: Important Guidelines
Before applying, organizations should carefully review the following requirements and funding conditions.
Grant Awards and Eligibility
- Yamaha will decide grant awards at its discretion. The amount awarded may vary depending on the quality of the application, project benefits to the OHV and outdoor recreation community, demonstrated need, and competition for available funds.
- Yamaha reserves the right to reject an application for any reason.
- An organization can receive only one Outdoor Access grant per calendar year. However, applicants may reapply in subsequent quarters until their application is approved and a grant is awarded.
- Applicants must be based in the United States and have nonprofit or tax-exempt status, such as 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(7). Official documentation confirming this status must be submitted with the application.
Required Letters and Financial Documents
Every application must include an endorsement letter from a local Yamaha dealership. The letter should show that the dealer is familiar with the applicant and explain the value or benefits of the proposed project.
Applicants must also provide a copy of their most recent tax return or a pro forma financial statement.
Government agencies are exempt from this financial-document requirement. However, they must submit a letter of support from a senior agency executive or elected official.
Requirements for U.S. Forest Service Projects
Projects located on U.S. Forest Service properties must partner with a local OHV riding group or state OHV riding association to administer the application and grant funds.
Yamaha gives priority to partnerships that are formally documented through a volunteer service contract or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). If funding is awarded, the grant will be provided to the OHV group or association and must be used exclusively for the project described in the application.
Consider Yamaha’s Involvement
Applicants should think carefully about how Yamaha or the Yamaha brand could be appropriately represented or included in the project if funding is awarded.
Reporting Requirements
Grant recipients are required to provide written progress reports every six months until the project is completed. A final written summary must also be submitted once the project is finished.
Yamaha provides recipients with a reporting template to help prepare these updates.
Reports and the final project summary must include:
- An accounting of how grant funds were spent, supported by invoices and receipts.
- Information about project events, media coverage, accomplishments, or other significant outcomes.
- Photographs documenting the project and its progress.
Yamaha may use submitted reports and photographs for marketing purposes and to evaluate the overall success of the project.
Projects That May Qualify for Funding
The Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative supports a range of projects that improve, protect, expand, or maintain outdoor recreation opportunities. Examples include:
- Trail development, restoration and maintenance, including materials, tools, safety equipment, equipment rentals, and contractor costs.
- Trail signage, including signs, equipment, and installation materials.
- Stage area and facility improvements, including materials, equipment rentals, and contractor services.
- Projects that protect environmentally sensitive areas from illegal or accidental OHV use, such as fencing, bridges, and hardscape improvements.
- Adopt-a-Trail programs, including equipment, tools, safety gear, and volunteer coordination.
- Trail mapping and map production, including GPS equipment and map production or printing.
- Safety and education programs, including educational materials, signage, safety equipment, and community events.
- Wildlife and habitat maintenance and management.
- Land management projects that expand the range of recreational activities available on public or recreational land.
- Projects that establish, expand, or maintain access to land for outdoor recreation, including but not limited to motorized recreation.
Important: Grant funds cannot be used to purchase Yamaha vehicles, and the program does not provide vehicles as outright donations.
Activities Given Lower Funding Priority
Although completed applications will be considered, Yamaha places a lower priority on requests primarily focused on:
- Staff salaries.
- Heavy equipment such as bulldozers and trail groomers.
- Facilities that do not have a direct connection to OHV access.
- Lobbying activities.
Using Yamaha Funds as Matching Support
Organizations applying for Yamaha funding as part of a larger grant or matching-fund project, such as a state or federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant, must explain the specific use of Yamaha funds within the larger project.
Simply identifying the Yamaha grant as matching funds is not enough. Applicants should clearly describe what portion of the project the Outdoor Access Initiative funding will support.
Vehicle Loan Opportunities
The Outdoor Access Initiative has a limited ability to approve loans of certain Yamaha vehicles. These loans are subject to specific conditions:
- Law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, forest field staff, and similar organizations should first explore Yamaha’s Law Enforcement Loan Program, which is available through many Yamaha dealers.
- Approved organizations must work directly with a Yamaha dealer to arrange the vehicle loan. Dealers are not required to participate.
- The organization must pick up the vehicle within 60 days of approval.
- Vehicle loans are valid for up to 12 months from the date of pickup.
- Organizations are responsible for maintaining the vehicle according to Yamaha’s recommendations and repairing any damage before returning it to the dealership.
Vehicle Purchase Discounts
Yamaha has a very limited number of discount vouchers that may provide up to 50% off the final purchase price of a vehicle.
However, Outdoor Access Initiative grant funds cannot be used to cover the remaining cost of purchasing a vehicle. Any request involving a Yamaha vehicle must clearly explain how the vehicle will help protect, expand, or maintain OHV access.
“Where to Ride” Information
As part of the Outdoor Access Initiative, Yamaha is also collecting information about places where people can legally ride in different areas.
Applicants are asked to provide:
- A detailed list of open and legal ATV and Side-by-Side trails and other riding areas.
- Seasonal closures, restrictions, and other relevant access information.
- Written descriptions of the riding areas.
- Maps or other useful illustrations.
If an application is approved, Yamaha may request digital copies of the submitted descriptions and maps. These materials will not be republished without the applicant’s prior written consent.
Applicants should also be aware that Yamaha will require the necessary rights and approvals to use the submitted “Where to Ride” information on its website as it considers appropriate, for an indefinite period.
What Makes a Strong Application?
1. Clearly Explain the Project and Its Impact
A strong application clearly describes what the project will accomplish, who will benefit, and how it will improve, protect, expand, or maintain access to OHV and outdoor recreation areas. Specific outcomes, photos, maps, and other supporting information can help demonstrate the project’s value.
2. Provide a Detailed and Realistic Budget
Applicants should present an itemized budget that shows exactly how the requested funds will be used. If Yamaha funding is part of a larger project, clearly explain which expenses will be covered by the Outdoor Access Initiative grant rather than simply listing it as matching support.
3. Demonstrate Local Support and Organizational Readiness
A required endorsement letter from a local Yamaha dealer should demonstrate the dealer’s familiarity with the organization and the proposed project. Applicants should also provide the required nonprofit or tax-exempt documentation and financial information to show that they are prepared to manage the grant responsibly.
