Applications Invited for 2026 The African Agentic AI Design Challenge Africa, This challenge is open to more than just developers or problem solvers from anywhere across Africa are encouraged to participate. The goal is straightforward: build an agentic AI solution using MCP and open-source tools to address a real workflow challenge faced by African institutions.

All tracks follow the same core principle: identify a genuine bottleneck and develop an AI-powered solution that makes work easier and more efficient. However, one rule is essential — the AI agent recommends, but a human makes the final decision.

The top 40 submissions will be shortlisted to receive mentorship and compute credits to help bring their ideas to life. From there, the 10 best teams will get the opportunity to showcase their solutions at the MCP Dev Summit in Nairobi this November!

Beyond the competition, the top 40 participants will become the first cohort in a growing pipeline of agentic AI talent across the African continent. If you want to solve real-world problems with AI, gain expert support, and put your work in the spotlight, your submission could be the first step toward that opportunity.

Explore the Four Challenge Tracks Applications Invited for 2026 The African Agentic AI Design Challenge Africa

Each track focuses on a real challenge faced by African institutions. Choose the area that interests you most and build an AI agent that offers a practical, meaningful solution.

  1. Health & Wellbeing — The Triage Desk

Help healthcare facilities manage patient queues more effectively. Build an agentic AI solution that helps identify patients who may need urgent attention and directs them to the appropriate level of care more quickly.

The focus is on improving triage through reliable, sourced information — not making medical diagnoses. Human oversight remains essential to ensure that clinical decisions stay in the hands of healthcare professionals.

  1. Governance — The Bid Box Challenge

Public tender evaluation can be time-consuming and difficult to manage. Your task is to build an agentic AI that helps review and evaluate public tenders, making it easier to organize information, assess requirements, and support transparent decision-making.

You will have five days to build your solution, followed by a 20-minute live review where you demonstrate your work and explain your code.

  1. Agriculture & Food Security — The Extension Backlog

Farmers and agricultural extension officers often work with scattered information about weather conditions, farming practices, and market prices. Build an agentic AI that brings these data sources together to generate well-supported planting and marketing recommendations.

The aim is to help real agricultural extension offices make more informed decisions, working with one farming collective at a time.

  1. Education — The Long View

A learner’s progress goes beyond the results of a single term. Develop an agentic AI that tracks a student’s learning journey over several years, identifying strengths, learning gaps, and changes in performance.

The solution should help teachers recognize students’ needs early and have more meaningful conversations with families about the next steps in each learner’s education.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

01. Do I need to register separately before taking part in the challenge?

No, there’s no need to fill out a separate registration form. The form available on the official website is also the challenge submission form, so you can submit it without completing another registration process first.

02. The form asks for a GitHub repository link, but I haven’t started building my AI agent yet. What should I do?

Don’t worry — you don’t need to have your agent ready just yet. Simply create a GitHub repository, publish it, and add its link to the submission form. You can then use that repository to build and improve your AI agent during the official challenge period.

03. Do I need to finish building my AI agent before submitting the form?

No. At this stage, you only need to provide the GitHub repository where you plan to develop your project. You can continue building your agent afterward, but make sure your final solution and all the required submission materials are ready before the deadline.

04. Can I make changes to my GitHub repository after submitting the form?

Yes! You can keep working on your project and updating your repository after submitting the form. Just make sure your final version and all required information are complete before the submission deadline.

05. When should I start building my AI agent?

The challenge has an official seven-day build period. Make sure you follow the dates announced by the challenge organizers, as the implementation being evaluated is expected to be developed within this designated window.

06. Can I make commits to my GitHub repository before the official seven-day build period begins?

You can create your repository, publish it, and prepare its basic structure beforehand. However, the actual implementation work for the AI agent you submit should take place during the official seven-day build period to comply with the challenge rules.

07. What is the final submission deadline?

The final submission deadline is 15 October 2026. Make sure you submit your completed AI agent, GitHub repository, demo, and any other required materials before the deadline. It’s always a good idea to leave yourself some extra time to check that everything works properly.

08. Is it okay to create my GitHub repository before the seven-day build period starts?

Absolutely! Setting up your repository in advance is allowed. You can create it, publish it, and organize its basic structure before the challenge begins. Just remember that the actual development of the agent being evaluated must happen within the official seven-day build window.

09. How can I join the challenge community?

You can join the official challenge community through the link shared by the organizers. It’s a useful place to stay updated on announcements, ask questions, discuss technical issues, and get support from the community throughout the challenge.
