Fellowship Specifications for Applications Invited for IBRO Exchange Fellowships 2026

 

The fellowship must be undertaken internationally, meaning the host laboratory must be located in a different country from the applicant’s home institution. All exchanges must commence in 2026. A final grant report is required and must be submitted no later than three months after completing the exchange.

Funding will be disbursed in an 80:20 structure—80% of the award will be transferred two months prior to the start of the exchange, with the remaining 20% released upon completion of the program and submission of the grant report. Funds may be transferred to the grantee, their institution, or a supervisor directly involved with the grant. Exceptions may be considered depending on the circumstances.

The fellowship is open to:

  • PhD students in neuroscience
  • Early-career postdoctoral fellows (up to five years from the start of their first postdoctoral appointment)

Applicants must currently reside in one of the following eligible regions:

  • Asia-Pacific
  • Latin America
  • Africa
  • United States/Canada

Applicants residing in Europe should apply through the dedicated FENS/IBRO-PERC Exchange Fellowship program.

If unsure of regional classification, applicants may refer to IBRO’s country classification list.

Regional Eligibility Requirements

Africa

  • Must be affiliated with a research or academic institution within Africa.
  • May apply for exchanges within or outside the region.
  • Grant must be paired with matching funds from the host laboratory.
  • Minimum exchange duration: 3 months
  • Maximum grant amount: USD 6,000

Asia-Pacific

Applicants in this region may apply to one of the following schemes:

  1. Short Exchange + Scientific Meeting
  • Combines a short laboratory visit with participation in a scientific meeting outside the applicant’s home country.
  • Lab visit duration: minimum 2 weeks, maximum 4 months.
  • Maximum grant amount: USD 2,500
  1. Classic Exchange
  • Requires a 4–6 month laboratory exchange.
  • May apply for exchanges within or outside the region.
  • Must be supplemented by matching host lab funds.
  • Maximum grant amount: USD 8,000

Latin America

  • May apply for exchanges within or outside the region.
  • Minimum exchange duration: 4 months
  • Maximum grant amount: USD 7,500

US/Canada

  • May apply for exchanges within or outside the region.
  • Minimum exchange duration: 4 months
  • Maximum grant amount: USD 8,000
