Fellowship Details

Each year, the Humboldt Residency Program offers participants the chance to collaborate intensively on a shared theme, generating innovative ideas and sharing them with a wide audience. The 2025 theme is “The Future of Food.”

This residency brings together a diverse, international group of twelve participants, including Humboldtians, junior researchers from various disciplines, writers, artists, civil society leaders, and social entrepreneurs. Over the course of a six-week residency in Brandenburg/Berlin, participants work closely in shared spaces, gaining valuable time and freedom to deepen their understanding of each other’s work, forge interdisciplinary connections, explore synergies, ask bold questions, and engage with relevant stakeholders in Berlin and globally.

Beyond mutual learning, participants design and execute creative formats to communicate their insights to audiences outside academia. These could include debates, media appearances, interactive workshops, blogs, social media posts, and publications.

Benefits include:

• A monthly allowance during the six-week residency in Brandenburg/Berlin
• Travel allowance for trips to and from Germany
• Accommodation at Schloss Wiepersdorf (2 weeks) and an aparthotel in Berlin (4 weeks)
• A budget to organize public events or produce end-of-year outputs
• For participants with dependent family members, the Foundation offers family accommodation and assistance with childcare arrangements.

Eligibility Criteria

The participants will include:

• A creative lead (as described above)
• Three Humboldt Foundation alumni/ae who have previously received any form of fellowship or award but are not engaged in any of the Foundation’s programs at the start of the Residency Program (June 2025). These individuals hold academic positions and are not currently based in Germany.
• Three junior researchers who are either pursuing their PhD or have completed their PhD within the last four years while still holding an academic position. They are not based in Germany.
• Five individuals from civil society, journalism, arts, or social entrepreneurship who are not affiliated with academic institutions.
