Fellowship Overview (Apply Now for United Nations Foundation Polio Press Fellowship Grants)

Journalists will receive funding to travel independently to one or more countries in Africa, including Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Mozambique. Other African countries may also be considered. They will gather stories through interviews with polio survivors, healthcare workers, community members, families, and health authorities.

Polio Eradication Efforts: Polio is a highly contagious disease that primarily affects children under five and can cause paralysis and death. While polio cases have decreased by more than 99% globally since 1988, the final steps towards eradication remain the most challenging, requiring continued vigilance.

Fellowship Goals: The fellowship aims to raise global awareness about the importance of polio eradication and how polio infrastructure can contribute to broader health goals. Journalists will have the opportunity to report on advancements in polio vaccination, the role of gender, barriers to vaccination, and the impacts of global challenges such as climate change, misinformation, conflict, and urbanization.
