Since its launch, the GEST Fellowship has empowered 241 fellows from 38 countries, equipping them with the tools and expertise to lead transformative social change and advance gender equality initiatives worldwide. These alumni have gone on to make significant contributions in their communities, amplifying the programme’s impact and fostering a global network of change-makers dedicated to creating a more equitable future.

Program Structure (Gro Gest Fellowship 2026 at The University Of Iceland)

The programme offers two distinct tracks for admissions: the Project Track and the Research Track

The Project Track is for applicants who plan to develop practical projects as their final assignment.

• Focus on practical outputs, often addressing pressing gender equality challenges.
• Projects are implemented with full backing from the fellow’s home organization.
• Fellows develop actionable project plans incorporating theories, methods, and skills studied during the programme.

The Research Track is intended for applicants whose final assignments will be purely research-based, aiming to produce scholarly work suitable for publication in academic journals.

• Focus on producing rigorous, publishable academic research.
• Fellows work closely with expert supervisors to refine and complete their research projects.
• Research outputs must meet academic standards for journal submission.

The GEST Fellowship features six interdisciplinary modules that delve into essential topics related to gender equality studies and policy formulation.

• Theories and Concepts of Gender
• Project Development Tools
• Gender, Violence, and Security
• Gender, Labour, and Migration
• Gender, Environment, and Climate Change
• Final Assignment (Research or Applied Project)

Participants will engage in interactive seminars, group projects, research work, and mentorship from leading scholars and practitioners in the field.

Eligibility Criteria (Gro Gest Fellowship 2026 at The University Of Iceland)

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria to qualify for the GEST Fellowship:

1. Academic and Professional Requirements

• Hold at least a bachelor’s degree (BA/BS/BEd level)
• Have a minimum of two years of professional experience related to gender equality
• Be fluent in spoken and written English

2. Career Level and Leadership Potential

• Be junior professionals or young researchers
• Demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to act as agents of change
• Show strong commitment to gender equality

3. Geographic Eligibility

• Be nationals and residents of low- or middle-income countries, or from conflict/post-conflict societies eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA) according to the latest OECD DAC list
• Priority is given to candidates from least developed and lower-middle-income countries

4. Nomination Process

• Candidates must be nominated by their employer or supervisor at their current organization
• Self-nominations are not accepted

5. Additional Prerequisites for the Research Track:

• Demonstrate very good to excellent grade averages from their recent academic institutions.
• Hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum first-class grade equivalent to 7.25 on the Icelandic grading scale.
• Provide evidence that their research has a high chance of publication in a respected academic journal.
