Application Open for Biodiversity Media Grants 2026 Offered by Earth Journalism Network, The latest assessment from the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) highlights a stark imbalance: in 2023, global investment in activities that damage biodiversity reached 7.3 trillion USD, while only 220 billion USD was directed toward protecting and restoring ecosystems. This alarming 30:1 ratio underscores how heavily economic priorities continue to tilt against nature.
If this pattern persists, the world risks pushing natural systems beyond the point of recovery—triggering cascading impacts on every aspect of human life, from the stability of our food supplies to the availability of essential medicines and safe housing.
Despite the magnitude of the crisis, biodiversity loss remains one of the least covered environmental threats in the media. It is frequently overshadowed by other issues and often omitted or underrepresented in environmental training programs. As a result, many journalists—and their audiences—are unaware of the urgency and scale of biodiversity decline.
To bridge this awareness gap, EJN’s Biodiversity Media Initiative is offering media grants of 10,000–12,000 EUR each to three to four organizations. These grants will support projects aimed at increasing both the quality and quantity of biodiversity reporting, while also strengthening the skills and capacity of journalists covering these issues.
Selected organizations will additionally benefit from the guidance of seasoned mentors throughout the duration of their projects.

Eligibility for Application Open for Biodiversity Media Grants 2026 Offered by Earth Journalism Network
Media organizations based in low- and middle-income countries, as defined by the World Bank, are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Applicants may review the current country classifications here.
We particularly welcome proposals from organizations operating in biodiversity-rich regions or in countries experiencing significant and accelerating biodiversity loss.
This call is open to journalist networks, media outlets, civil society organizations, and academic institutions. While applications from NGOs or environmental groups aiming to strengthen journalistic capacity will be considered, priority will go to proposals submitted by—or in partnership with—professional journalists, media organizations, or journalism schools.
Applications focused on advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered.
All applications must be submitted in English. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to review proposals in other languages. Applicants must therefore have sufficient working English proficiency or access to a translator to maintain communication with EJN staff.
Current or former EJN grantees are welcome to apply. Performance on previous grants will be taken into account, but organizations funded by EJN in 2024 will not be eligible for funding in this round.
Applicants must disclose any use of generative AI tools in preparing their proposals. EJN reserves the right to disqualify applications that involve unethical conduct, including misrepresenting AI-generated material as original work.
Project Themes and Objectives for Application Open for Biodiversity Media Grants 2026 Offered by Earth Journalism Network
Funded projects should aim to raise public awareness of biodiversity threats and spotlight effective conservation solutions, particularly targeting audiences in low- and middle-income countries.
Projects may also include capacity-building components designed to help journalists and communicators strengthen their skills, expand their knowledge, and grow their professional networks. For proposals focused solely on producing content, outputs must be substantial and rigorous—such as a multi-episode podcast series or a comprehensive investigative project. Applications proposing fewer than 10 stories will be considered uncompetitive unless they also include training or capacity-building elements.
Possible project outputs include (but are not limited to):
- In-depth stories that broaden and deepen coverage of biodiversity and conservation issues
- Transboundary, collaborative, investigative or data-driven reporting that encourages peer learning and content exchange between media houses across regions
- Workshops, field trips, or other biodiversity-related training activities for journalists, media groups, or content creators
- Development of reporter resources or e-learning tools to support environmental journalism
- Creation of innovative mapping, data visualization, or fact-checking tools to strengthen environmental reporting and distribution
- Establishment of new storytelling platforms
- Creation or expansion of journalist networks focused on biodiversity issues, enabling strategic collaboration and community-responsive reporting
- Cross-sector collaborations between journalists, researchers, policymakers, and information providers
Priority Themes for This Round
We are especially interested in proposals focusing on:
- OECMs (other effective area-based conservation measures) as alternatives to protected areas contributing to the Global Biodiversity Framework’s 30×30 target
- Business dependencies on—and impacts on—nature
- Collaborative conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity involving local communities, government agencies, and the private sector
- Nature-based solutions that support biodiversity alongside other goals (climate mitigation, food security, livelihoods, health, etc.)
- Unintended negative impacts arising from conservation actions
- Connections between biodiversity and human health

Grant amount and logistics for Application Open for Biodiversity Media Grants 2026 Offered by Earth Journalism Network
We expect to award three to four grants, each valued at 10,000–12,000 EUR. In general, proposals with leaner budgets are likely to be more competitive, though higher funding requests may be approved for projects that employ innovative, resource-intensive, or time-demanding approaches.
Successful applicants will be notified in April 2026, with project activities beginning in May 2026. All projects must be completed within a 12-month period, no later than April 2027. Applicants should design their proposed work plan with this schedule in mind.
Every applicant must submit a detailed budget using the required template, including clear justification for all requested costs. Budgets should be realistic and reflect the true expenses necessary for effective project delivery.
A portion of the grant may be used to purchase equipment, provided applicants explain how the equipment directly supports the project’s objectives and expected outputs. Equipment expenses should represent only a small share of the overall budget.
Co-financing is permitted and encouraged, though not mandatory. Applicants already securing external financial support should indicate the amount and source in their proposal.
For projects involving published content, please note that Internews, EJN, their partners, and the grant funder will retain the rights to edit, publish, broadcast, and distribute the resulting materials freely.
Safety
Grantees are strongly encouraged to develop comprehensive risk management plans, covering physical safety, digital security, and mental health considerations for staff, participants, and community members engaged in the project. You may consult EJN’s safety tipsheet or another reliable resource of your choosing. Any necessary security-related expenses should be included in the project budget.
