To advance the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), inclusive participation from all sectors of society is vital in addressing climate and biodiversity challenges. Adequate financial resources are a cornerstone of this effort. The IKI Small Grants Programme empowers local stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, to take the lead in implementing impactful climate and biodiversity initiatives. These grassroots actors play a pivotal role in driving change, as they operate on the frontlines where the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss are most acute, directly engaging with the communities most affected.

Since its launch in 2019, the IKI Small Grants Programme has been supporting small-scale projects led by local organizations and funding institutions in ODA-eligible countries, helping them deliver measurable outcomes and create meaningful impacts.

Managed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the programme provides funding through two key channels: International Calls and Funding Institutions. Both focus on supporting non-profit initiatives aligned with IKI’s core areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, protecting natural carbon sinks (including REDD+), and conserving biodiversity.

Under the International Calls funding stream, projects are selected annually, with a target to fund approximately 220 initiatives by the end of 2029.

Eligibility Criteria

Funding line International Calls

• Funding is made available for sub-national, national and regional non-profit organisations in ODA-eligible countries.
• For-profit non-governmental organisations are also eligible as long as their proposal has not-for-profit objectives.
• Organisations who apply must have at least three years of relevant experience and average annual revenue of between 60,000 and 500,000 euros.

Funding line Funding Institutions

• The German government and GIZ together identify and select potential national and regional institutions, which must pass a comprehensive assessment of economic viability and other risks.
• The funding institutions selected are based in ODA-eligible countries and must have been operational for at least three years, with an average annual turnover of no less than 500,000 euros.
• Additionally, they are expected to have experience in managing grants and disbursing funds.
• IKI Small Grants ensures that projects address specific local challenges and achieve measurable impacts, guaranteeing that the funding is both valuable and effective.
