About Japan Fund for Global Environment
In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, commonly known as the Earth Summit, convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, bringing together over 100 heads of state and representatives from more than 180 nations to address pressing environmental issues. Prior to this significant event, Japan hosted the Eminent Persons Meeting on Financing Global Environment and Development, where the Japanese government articulated its commitment to support NGO-led environmental conservation efforts, alongside traditional aid.
The following year, the Japan Environment Corporation Law was revised, leading to the establishment of the Japan Fund for Global Environment (JFGE) in 1993. Since then, the JFGE has actively implemented a variety of projects aimed at promoting and supporting the environmental initiatives of NGOs. In April 2004, the fund was transferred from the Japan Environment Corporation to the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency.
