Proposal Invited for African Energy Futures Grant Program 2026, We invite universities, think tanks, and research institutions across Africa to express their interest in establishing a collaborative hub. These hubs will serve as the foundation of our partnership network—driving locally led research, shaping the strategic direction of African Energy Futures, and actively engaging across our platforms.
Our first Call for Proposals launches in December 2025. Institutions that register will be eligible to apply for multi-year funding to grow and strengthen their research hubs. Successful hubs will unite local expertise, promote sustained collaboration, and work closely with national policymakers.
We seek committed teams dedicated to inclusive, forward-looking energy planning and long-term transformational change across the continent.

Proposals Overview for Proposal Invited for African Energy Futures Grant Program 2026
Thank you for your interest in submitting a proposal to host an energy research hub. Applicant institutions are expected to play a leading role in building a pan-African community of practice and to use the support provided by AEF to establish strong, sustainable institutions. These institutions should remain active in collaborative research and capacity building well beyond the AEF funding period.
This funding is not project-specific. Instead, it is designed to strengthen or create institutions dedicated to energy modelling and planning across Africa. We anticipate that hubs will drive multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder research that meaningfully influences policy decisions and investment landscapes. Through leadership and close collaboration with peer institutions and future hubs, successful applicants will help amplify Africa’s voice in global energy dialogues.
We are currently inviting concept submissions for fully funded hubs, with grants of up to USD 1 million, to be disbursed over a 3–5 year period.
How to Submit a Proposal for Proposal Invited for African Energy Futures Grant Program 2026
The proposals process is divided into two stages. You are invited to submit a concept note of no more than 5 pages explaining how your institution will execute the requirements of a hub: conduct model based energy research, train the next generation, and convene a community of practice. By completing the form below you will be taken to a submission page that includes detailed guidance on eligibility and our expectations for the concept note. Concept notes are to be submitted via the submission page no later than midnight on the 30th January 2026.
The top concept notes (up to 10) will be invited to submit proposals. The AEF team will communicate this news to you directly by the 20th February 2026. If you do not receive a formal invitation to submit a proposal please assume your bid for this round was unsuccessful. There will be further opportunities to engage. By submitting a bid you consent to AEF using your concept note to engage with third parties to attract further funding and partner support.
