The grant is named after Wayne F. Placek, who was a participant in the pioneering research of psychologist Evelyn Hooker during the 1950s. Her work was instrumental in challenging the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder, ultimately contributing to its removal as a clinical diagnosis. Inspired by her impact, Placek bequeathed his estate to support research that promotes understanding and reduces the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals.
