Overview for Proposals Invited for Grant Opportunity Wayne F Placek Grants 2026

The Wayne F. Placek Grant supports research aimed at improving public understanding of homosexuality and sexual orientation, while helping to reduce the stress experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals both now and in the future. Since its establishment in 1995, the Placek Fund has awarded more than $1 million to advance research in this field.

The grant encourages studies focusing on key areas such as:

  • Attitudes and behaviors of heterosexual individuals toward LGBTQIA+ communities, including issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence
  • Family dynamics and workplace challenges affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals
  • Concerns of historically underrepresented groups within the LGBTQIA+ population
  • Issues specifically impacting Black LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities

In 2025, two grants will be awarded. One of these, the Wayne F. Placek Grant in Memory of John Peterson, will specifically support psychological research on issues affecting Black LGBTQIA+ communities, conducted by scholars of color.

The grant is named after Wayne F. Placek, who was a participant in the pioneering research of psychologist Evelyn Hooker during the 1950s. Her work was instrumental in challenging the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder, ultimately contributing to its removal as a clinical diagnosis. Inspired by her impact, Placek bequeathed his estate to support research that promotes understanding and reduces the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. Today, the program continues this legacy, having funded over $1 million in research dedicated to these important issues.
