Research and innovation are central to NLRIF’s mission. The organization designs and implements operational research, implementation research, clinical and community-based studies, programme evaluations, health systems research, and knowledge translation initiatives in leprosy, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), disability inclusion, mental wellbeing, WASH, tuberculosis, community health, and related public health areas.

NLR India has built a strong research portfolio spanning leprosy transmission prevention, spatial epidemiology, psychosocial wellbeing and implementation science. Its work includes the Leprosy Post Exposure Prophylaxis (LPEP) programme and the development/testing of a digital PEP App in Howrah and Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal, to improve contact screening, eligibility assessment and SDR-PEP delivery. NLR also contributed to the evidence base that supported WHO’s 2018 recommendation of SDR-PEP in its leprosy guidelines from its study in Dadra Nagar Haveli. Further research has addressed spatial clustering, PEP++ multi-country study with expected better preventive efficiacy, stigma and mental wellbeing, peer support, and translation of evidence into practical tools and programmes.

The National Research Coordinator will provide strategic and technical leadership for the organization’s research programme. The position will coordinate the planning, implementation, monitoring and dissemination of high-quality research projects while ensuring scientific rigor, ethical compliance, donor accountability and translation of evidence into policy and practice.

The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Chief Executive Officer and closely with programme teams, state offices, academic institutions, government agencies, donors, research partners and international collaborators to expand NLRIF’s research portfolio and enhance organizational learning.

1. Research Leadership:

• Lead planning, implementation and monitoring of national and multi-state research projects.
  • Coordinate operational, implementation, epidemiological, qualitative and mixed-methods research.

  • Promote research that generates evidence for programme improvement and policy influence.

2. Project Coordination:

• Develop detailed research implementation plans and timelines.
  • Monitor progress of ongoing studies across project locations.
  • Coordinate field implementation with state programme teams.
  • Ensure timely achievement of research milestones and deliverables.
  • Identify implementation challenges and recommend corrective actions.

3. Research Quality and Ethics:

• Ensure compliance with approved research protocols.
  • Coordinate ethical review submissions, amendments and renewals.
  • Maintain adherence to Good Clinical Practice and research governance standards where applicable.
  • Ensure data quality through regular monitoring, verification and supportive supervision.

4. Proposal Development and Resource Mobilization:

5. Technical Reporting:

6. Publications and Scientific Communication:

• Lead and coordinate preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

7. Knowledge Management:

• Lead organizational knowledge management initiatives.

8. Capacity Strengthening:

• MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, Veterinary, Nursing or other Health Science degree with Master’s in Public Health, Epidemiology, Community Medicine, Biostatistics, Health Systems, Social Sciences or related discipline.

Experience:

• Minimum 8–10 years of progressively responsible experience in public health research.

The position requires frequent travel to programme states and project locations across India.
