Open Call The Loeb Fellowship 2027-28 Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Loeb Fellowship at Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) provides accomplished professionals working in the built and natural environment with a fully funded, non-degree opportunity for a year of learning, reflection and professional renewal within a university setting.

Designed for active-career practitioners, the fellowship enables participants to reflect on their experience, develop new skills and explore ideas that can shape the next stage of their careers. The programme is intended to help fellows become more effective contributors to positive change in their fields.

A joint Loeb/ArtLab Fellowship is also available for artists whose work aligns with the fellowship’s mission. Selected artists receive access to studio space and resources through Harvard’s ArtLab, supporting further development of their creative practice.

The Loeb Fellowship welcomes mid-career practitioners whose work contributes to improving the built or natural environment and creates broad social impact. Eligible professionals may include:

  • Urban designers
  • Public artists
  • Developers
  • Journalists
  • Civic leaders
  • Architects
  • Landscape architects
  • Urban planners
  • Policymakers
  • Community development leaders

The programme also considers professionals from other fields whose work aligns with its mission. Previous fellows have included theatre directors, documentary filmmakers and journalists.

Fellow Responsibilities Open Call The Loeb Fellowship 2027-28 Harvard Graduate School of Design

 

Selected fellows are expected to actively participate in the programme and:

  • Step away from significant professional and employment responsibilities, including speaking engagements and conferences, during the fellowship year.
  • Audit at least one GSD course per semester.
  • Remain in the Cambridge area while classes are in session.
  • Participate in all fellowship activities, including weekly seminars with the curator, weekly dinners with invited guests, and fall and spring study tours and retreats.
  • Engage with Harvard GSD students and faculty and participate in the broader academic community while making use of available Harvard and MIT resources.
  • Develop and periodically update an individual work plan in consultation with programme staff. A summary of the plan will be included in the final programme report.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have at least 8 years of professional or practice experience, making the fellowship primarily intended for mid-career practitioners.
  • There is no formal degree requirement. The programme values creative and motivated professional experience, along with a demonstrated commitment to supporting others.
  • International applicants, including non-US citizens, are eligible. Selected international fellows must obtain a J-1 visa.
  • The fellowship is not intended for students.
  • Academics on sabbatical are generally not eligible unless more than 50% of their time is devoted to professional practice. Applicants in this situation are advised to contact the programme for clarification.
  • Applicants with unconventional backgrounds or non-traditional career paths are encouraged to apply when they can demonstrate the capacity to make a meaningful difference through their work.
