Applications are now open for Shakespeare In American Communities Juvenile Justice US Grant Opportunity 2026, This grant program supports theater companies collaborating with the justice system to engage young people in theater education initiatives inspired by the works of Shakespeare.

Eligible applicants include U.S.-based 501(c)(3) theater organizations or those located within the Native Nations sharing this geography. Applicants must demonstrate at least two years of experience working with the juvenile justice system to deliver impactful theater education programs.

Selected organizations will receive grants ranging from USD 15,000 to 25,000, with no matching funds required. All funded programming must be implemented between August 1, 2026, and July 31, 2027.

Eligibility Criteria

Shakespeare in American Communities: Juvenile Justice welcomes applications from 501c3 non-profit professional theater companies located in the U.S. or the Native Nations that share this geography.

Who should apply?

  • 501c3 non-profit professional theater companies that have a minimum of two years’ experience partnering with the justice system to provide theater education programs.
  • Organizations located within the United States, US Territories, and the Native Nations that share this geography.
  • Organizations that do not have overdue reports or funding moratoria with Arts Midwest.
  • Organizations with a UEI number from SAM.gov on file by late April 2026 (necessary in order to receive grant funds) Apply for a free UEI at SAM.gov.
  • Organizations that can comply with Federal eligibility requirements.

Grants of $15,000 – $25,000 will support theater education programs that reach young people in the juvenile justice system.

Panel Review Process and Criteria

Applications are reviewed by an independent advisory panel. That panel is composed of a diverse group of arts and theater experts and other individuals with broad knowledge of community programs.

A panel uses the following four criteria to review applications. Geographic spread of final awards will also be considered.

Grantees are selected based on:

Artistic excellence and merit of programming. The panel will review the content of the theater education programming and the credentials and experience of teaching artists or actors, staff, or personnel.

Depth of audience engagement. The panel will consider the plans to address the needs of students of different backgrounds, abilities, ages, and learning styles as well as potential.

Planning for success. The panel will evaluate the plan for using the grant funds; a clear plan to navigate and adapt to the practical barriers of partnering with the justice system; and goals that are clearly stated and align with Shakespeare in American Communities: Juvenile Justice.

Resource management. The panel will consider the applicant’s ability to manage and implement their proposed programming. This could include the evidence of the organization’s past work with the justice system; organizational expertise; proven fiscal responsibility; etc.

Applications for the 2026-2027 cycle are now open. A mandatory Intent to Apply is due January 29, 2026. Full applications are due February 12, 2026.
