Call for Research Proposals 2205 BIRAX Healthy Ageing for UK and Israel, BIRAX (the Britain–Israel Research and Academic Exchange) is a major multi-million-pound programme led by the British Council and the British Embassy in Israel, in partnership with the Pears Foundation. It supports cutting-edge collaborative research carried out by leading scientists from both the UK and Israel.
We are pleased to announce the launch of the latest BIRAX call for proposals under the Healthy Ageing phase. This new stage is a natural progression from earlier funding rounds and has been thoughtfully developed to focus on one of the most urgent global issues of our time.
Since its inception in 2012, BIRAX has provided more than £12.5 million in funding, supporting 32 projects across five calls under the Regenerative Medicine Initiative (RMI) and Ageing programmes. The new Healthy Ageing phase builds on the insights gained from these earlier efforts and responds to the growing challenges posed by ageing populations. Its aim is to deepen scientific knowledge of the ageing process and explore its influence on health, functionality, and overall well-being. The phase underscores BIRAX’s ongoing dedication to advancing research that not only examines the biology of ageing but also focuses on sustaining mobility, vitality, and quality of life.
In addition to the main Call for Proposals, we are also introducing a Healthy Ageing Follow-on Funding sub-call. This opportunity is reserved for previous BIRAX project leads and co-leads, allowing them to extend and enhance their earlier successful projects under the Regenerative Medicine Initiative or Healthy Ageing phases. The sub-call will follow the same documentation, deadlines, and two-stage review process (Preliminary Proposal followed by Full Proposal) as the primary call.
We encourage British and Israeli researchers to jointly submit proposals aimed at strengthening our understanding of ageing and its effects on human health and well-being. Projects using a comprehensive approach to healthy ageing—such as innovative methods, advanced technologies, and interdisciplinary strategies—are strongly welcomed, demonstrating the unique value of international scientific collaboration.

Submission Process

Both the main BIRAX Healthy Ageing Call for Proposals and the Follow-on Funding sub-call will follow a two-stage application procedure. The current phase is the Preliminary Proposal, which expands on the earlier Concept Note stage. After the preliminary proposals are assessed, shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a Full Proposal. The Full Proposal stage is anticipated to run between March and June 2026.
