Overview of (Nagao Natural Environment Foundation Commemorative Grant Fund Young Scientists Programme 2025)
The research initiative is designed to advance nature conservation in the project scientist’s (PS) home country, with an emphasis on living organisms—particularly wildlife and ecosystems. Eligible studies may explore topics such as ecology, taxonomy, species distribution and status, biodiversity (at species, genetic, and ecosystem levels), threatened or invasive species, ecosystem restoration, and the interrelationship between people and nature (e.g., ecosystem services and sustainable resource use).
The standard research duration is two years, extendable up to three years for students based in Japan. Grant support ranges between 1,500,000 and 2,500,000 JPY per project, depending on the PS’s qualifications. Covered expenses include field travel, survey and analysis materials, wages for essential labor, reference resources, and awareness activities. Personal expenses, institutional overheads, and purchase of versatile equipment are not eligible.
The program specifically supports young researchers (under 40) from designated Asia-Pacific countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Fed.), Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Vietnam.
Applicants must serve as the PS, working under the mentorship of a project coordinator (PC). The PS must be under 40, a national of one of the target countries, and either (a) hold a PhD or have at least three years of research experience, or (b) be enrolled in / applying to a doctoral course at a Japanese university. The PS cannot hold another ongoing NEF grant at the time of application.
The PC serves as supervisor: for students in Japan, the PC is typically the main or co-supervisor; for researchers in the Asia-Pacific region, the PC is generally expected to have prior teaching or research experience in Japan. PCs are responsible for advising the PS, supporting project implementation, and maintaining close coordination with the CGF Management Committee and NEF Secretariat.
Projects must be planned and executed by the PS as the principal investigator. For Asia-Pacific researchers, projects must be fieldwork-based and department-approved. For students in Japan, fieldwork should relate to their dissertation and be carried out either in Japan or in their home country. Proposals centered on agriculture, forestry, or fisheries; projects already funded by other bodies; or those nearly completed at submission will not be considered.
