Open Call for 2026 Strategic Research Programme The Arctic in Transition 2026 Finland, The Academy of Finland, via the Strategic Research Council (SRC), has introduced a new Strategic Research Programme aimed at examining how ongoing changes in the Arctic impact communities, ecosystems, infrastructure, and security. This programme supports long-term, multidisciplinary research consortia designed to enhance Finland’s preparedness, inform policy, and promote sustainable leadership in its role as an Arctic nation.

The programme seeks to strengthen Finland’s strategic knowledge and capacity as Arctic change continues to accelerate. It examines how environmental, social, economic, and political shifts intersect and shape people’s lives, livelihoods, and systems of governance. Its main goals are to:

  • Build deeper scientific insight into Arctic environmental and societal transformation
  • Support evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development
  • Enhance Finland’s position as a knowledgeable, forward-looking Arctic leader
  • Promote fair and balanced solutions that consider nature, communities, and the economy together

Research is expected to combine natural sciences, social sciences, economics, and policy research, encouraging both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Communities, Livelihoods, and Infrastructure

  • Consequences of Arctic change for local and Indigenous communities
  • Resilience of infrastructure under extreme and evolving conditions
  • Adaptation of livelihoods, transportation, and logistics systems

Nature–Economy Balance

  • Sustainable management and use of natural resources
  • Interactions, tensions, and synergies between economic growth and environmental protection
  • Roles of business, governance, and communities in sustainable Arctic development

Funding Information and Duration for Open Call for 2026 Strategic Research Programme The Arctic in Transition 2026 Finland

Funding amount: Around €24 million has been allocated for the initial three-year phase. This total will be divided between the two SRC programs that are currently open.

Funding period:
• First funding phase: 1 October 2026 – 30 September 2029
• Second funding phase: 1 October 2029 – 30 September 2032

Who Can Apply?

Applications must come from research consortia that fulfill the SRC’s eligibility and structural requirements.

Each consortium should include the following core roles:

  • Principal Investigator (PI): Provides overall scientific leadership and direction
  • Work Package Leaders: Hold appropriate academic backgrounds and oversee specific project components
  • Interaction Manager: Coordinates stakeholder engagement and ensures societal relevance and impact

All members in leadership positions must demonstrate strong expertise and experience aligned with the project’s aims and thematic areas.
