UNESCO Invites Proposals for Engaging Young People to Co-Develop a Carbon Footprint Calculator for Schools Nepal 2026, To develop a carbon footprint calculator that is educational, contextually relevant, and aligned with Nepal’s draft Green School Implementation Standards, UNESCO Kathmandu is looking for a partner organization to lead a structured Youth Co-Design Workshop. This partner will guide young participants through brainstorming, ideation, and prototyping activities, and then convert their insights into a practical, easy-to-use carbon footprint calculator for schools in Nepal.
The selected organization will coordinate closely with CEHRD, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other key stakeholders to compile youth recommendations, refine concepts, and create the final tool. The process is designed to ensure that the calculator captures the real experiences, priorities, and ambitions of Nepali students while remaining technically sound, accessible, and suitable for a wide range of school environments.
Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the full details and submit their applications before the specified deadline to seize this grant opportunity.

Overall Objective for UNESCO Invites Proposals for Engaging Young People to Co-Develop a Carbon Footprint Calculator for Schools Nepal 2026
The objective of this Request for Proposal is to invite qualified organizations to submit proposals for supporting the implementation of the project titled Strengthening a Climate Smart, Green, and Resilient Education System in Nepal by mentoring and engaging Nepali youth in co-designing the concept, structure, features, and feasibility options for a carbon footprint calculator tailored for learners in Nepal’s diverse school environments.
Specific Objectives for UNESCO Invites Proposals for Engaging Young People to Co-Develop a Carbon Footprint Calculator for Schools Nepal 2026
To raise awareness among learners about carbon literacy, school-level emissions, and Nepal’s draft Green School Implementation Standards.
To organize a hackathon to empower young people to analyze user needs, contextual considerations, and technical requirements for a school-friendly carbon footprint calculator.
To generate youth-led recommendations on the format, platform, scope, and functionalities of the calculator (e.g., Excel, app, booklet-based, hybrid tool).
To ensure the carbon footprint calculator is educational, practical, low-cost, and adaptable for both rural and urban schools in Nepal.
To mentor selected youth to co-design and develop the carbon footprint calculator to a pilotable tool.
Finalize the tool once piloted in schools within the Kathmandu Valley.
The initiative aims at equipping learners with the tools and knowledge necessary to drive meaningful climate action, fostering a transformative impact by building their capacity to adapt to and mitigate the challenges of climate change, smart actions and mitigation efforts through schools. Output
This assignment contributes to the Outcome 3 of the project: Schools serve as scalable models for being climate-smart, green and resilient, and are promoting resilience and green practices within the school and in the community.
It also contributes to the 42 C/5 results framework of Output 7.ED3 – Learners are empowered to lead healthy lives, promote sustainable development and engage with the world as creative and responsible global citizens.

This will contribute to achieving UNSDCF Output 2.2.1: “Strengthened inclusive and equitable educational institutions and systems at all levels of government promoting quality education for all children and young people.”
Expected Outcome for UNESCO Invites Proposals for Engaging Young People to Co-Develop a Carbon Footprint Calculator for Schools Nepal 2026
Through consultation meetings, hackathon and mentorship, the initiative aims to provide technical support to youths to develop a carbon footprint calculator for learners for them to better understand the carbon footprint left behind by day-to-day activities and ways to offset these impacts. By equipping learners, teachers, schools, and communities with essential tools and knowledge, the project fosters meaningful climate action and strengthens their understanding of carbon footprint and their offset mechanisms.
Youth Co-Design Engagement:
During the structured hackathon and co-design process, the following key stakeholders will be actively engaged:
Students and young professionals (ages 18–35)
Youth from diverse geographical regions of Nepal
Young mobile/app developers, climate activists, and innovators
Members of UNESCO Youth Clubs and Associations
These stakeholders will meaningfully participate in designing and developing a school-friendly carbon footprint calculator, contributing context-sensitive ideas as well as practical prototypes during the hackathon and co-design process.
Youth-Led Design Recommendations Produced:
A concise Youth Recommendation Summary outlining preferred calculator formats, key data categories, features, accessibility needs, and alignment with green school standards.
Prototype Development and Mentorship:
Selected youth teams are mentored to refine their concepts and contribute to the development of a functional, bilingual (Nepali/English), low-cost, and context-appropriate carbon footprint calculator.
A grant prize of up to NPR 130,000 will be awarded to the winning idea to support further development of the tool.
As part of this process, the organization shall:
Design and apply a transparent evaluation and selection matrix to identify the winning team, clearly outlining selection criteria (e.g. relevance, feasibility, usability, educational value, and alignment with green school standards); and
Ensure that the selected team submits a brief budget and justification for the proposed use of the grant amount. The budget needs to be within NPR 130,000, and the costs need to be reasonable, well-justified, and aligned with the scope of prototype development.
Prototype Development and Mentorship:
Selected youth teams are mentored to refine concepts and contribute to the development of a functional, bilingual (Nepali/English), low-cost, and context-appropriate carbon footprint calculator.
Finalized Tool:
A draft calculator is presented to UNESCO and youth groups for feedback, resulting in a finalized, pilot-ready carbon footprint calculator for Nepali schools. A draft carbon footprint calculator is presented to UNESCO and participating youth groups for review and feedback. The revised tool is then piloted in selected schools within the Kathmandu Valley to test usability, accessibility, and educational relevance in real classroom and school settings.
Based on feedback from students, teachers, and school administrators during the piloting phase, the tool is further refined and finalized. The result is a tested and validated carbon footprint calculator, accompanied by user guidance and technical documentation, ready for wider replication and scaling in Nepali schools.
Qualifications/experience:
Interested organization should have the required qualifications and sector specific experience and a dedicated team to accomplish this assignment. Please refer to the complete ToR for the complete information on qualifications/experience.
