Open Call for 2026 TWAS CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme, The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India, in collaboration with UNESCO-TWAS, has introduced a fellowship programme for scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue PhD-level research in emerging areas of science and technology. The programme allows selected candidates to carry out their research at CSIR laboratories and institutes in India, where advanced research facilities are available to support their academic and scientific work.

Programme Details for Open Call for 2026 TWAS CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

 

The TWAS–CSIR Postgraduate Fellowships enable scholars to conduct research at CSIR laboratories and institutes in India for a maximum period of four years. Applicants may either already be enrolled in a PhD programme in their home country or choose to pursue a PhD at a university in India during the fellowship period.

Information about eligible CSIR laboratories and institutes can be accessed through the CSIR network map, while a detailed list of participating institutes is also available on the programme page.

The fellowship is offered in two categories:

  • Sandwich Fellowships: These are intended for applicants who are already registered for a PhD programme in their home country. The fellowship can be awarded for a minimum period of 6 months and for a duration determined by the host institute, but not exceeding three years.
  • Full-Time Fellowships: These are designed for applicants who are not yet enrolled in a PhD programme. The fellowship may be granted for a maximum duration of four years.

Selected fellows will receive a monthly stipend from CSIR to cover living expenses, food, and health insurance. The stipend cannot be converted into foreign currency. In addition, fellowship recipients will have access to subsidised accommodation. The language of instruction and research at CSIR laboratories and institutes is English.

Eligibility for Open Call for 2026 TWAS CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

 

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 35 years of age or younger as of 31 December of the application year.
  • Must be a national of a developing country (other than India).
  • Must not hold temporary or permanent residency or a visa in India or any developed country.
  • Must possess a Master’s degree in science or technology.
  • Must be regularly employed in their home country and hold a research assignment there.

For Sandwich Fellowships:

  • Applicants must be registered PhD students in their home country and provide a Registration and No Objection Certificate from their home university.

For Full-Time Fellowships:

  • Applicants must be willing to register for a PhD programme at a university in India within the first year, subject to approval by CSIR.

Additionally, applicants must:

  • Obtain acceptance from a CSIR laboratory or institute and provide an official acceptance letter from the host institution. Requests for acceptance must be sent directly to the selected CSIR host institution(s).
  • Provide proof of English language proficiency if their previous education was not conducted in English.
  • Provide evidence confirming that they will return to their home country after completing the fellowship.
  • Not undertake other assignments during the fellowship period.
  • Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members during their stay.
