What is The Qualifications and Experience Required for Indian Institute of Science Invites Applications for Post-Doctoral Fellowship Opportunity 2026

Applicants should possess:

  • A PhD degree with First Class or equivalent grades in the preceding degree(s).
  • A consistently strong academic record.
  • Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis may also apply by submitting proof of thesis submission.
  • Applicants are preferably expected to be below 32 years of age at the time of application.

Fellowship Duration

  • The fellowship is initially offered for one year.
  • An extension for an additional year may be granted based on performance evaluation.

What are the Fellowship Benefits?

Selected fellows will receive:

  • A consolidated fellowship of INR 80,000 per month plus applicable House Rent Allowance (HRA).
  • A research grant of INR 2 lakh per year.

Candidates who have not yet defended their thesis but are selected under the programme will receive:

  • INR 50,000 per month plus applicable HRA.
  • No research grant until successful thesis defence and submission of the PhD/provisional degree certificate.

After successful completion of the PhD requirements, they will be upgraded to the full IPDF fellowship. The total tenure, including the pre-defence period, will remain one year.

  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and foreign nationals are eligible to apply.
  • Merely meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection or interview.

How to apply for the fellowship opportunity 2026?

Application Process

Interested candidates must first contact a faculty member at the institute who is willing to host their post-doctoral research. A consent letter or consent email from the faculty member is mandatory and must be included in the application package. Applications should then be submitted through the online Post-Doctoral application portal.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a complete list of publications.
  • PDF copies of at least two and up to five significant research publications.
  • A proposed research plan of up to 500 words.
  • Consent letter or email from the hosting faculty member.
  • PDF copy of the PhD degree certificate, provisional PhD award certificate, or PhD thesis submission certificate.
  • Any additional relevant information the applicant wishes to provide.

Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, reviews are conducted quarterly on the following dates:

  • 31 March
  • 30 June
  • 30 September
  • 31 December

Applicants can generally expect a decision within six weeks after the respective review date.

Selection Process

Candidates must submit their applications before the applicable quarterly review deadline. Applications will first undergo screening, after which a shortlisted group of candidates will be invited for an interview, either in person or through video conferencing, before final selections are made.
