The Impart & Nalli Fellowships 2027–28 encourage innovative research that explores overlooked textile histories, traditions, and practices across South Asia. While applicants are free to propose any textile-focused research topic, projects in the following areas are particularly encouraged:

• The role of textiles in religious, literary, mythological, and ceremonial traditions.
• Environmental and sustainability issues linked to textile production and consumption.
• Documentation and preservation of endangered or fading textile crafts.
• Critical studies on textile revival, digitisation, archives, and the afterlife of textile materials.
• Labour, livelihoods, and social issues in textile production, including perspectives on caste, class, and gender.
• Connections between textiles and other cultural expressions such as music, storytelling, poetry, architecture, and material culture.
• Traditional weaving methods, textile technologies, tools, and production techniques.
• The place of South Asian textiles in the modern global design and fashion industry.

The fellowship grant is intended to support one year of research, which may also contribute to a larger long-term project. At the conclusion of the fellowship, recipients are expected to submit the following:

Project Report

A detailed report documenting the research process, findings, and outcomes completed during the fellowship period.

Research Dossier

A public-facing research document prepared jointly with Impart. Based on the project report, the dossier will highlight key insights, research questions, and major findings, and will be published on Impart’s website.

Final Project Outputs

Fellows are also required to produce completed works arising from their research, which may include:

• Audio-visual content, such as interviews or short documentary films.
• Visual essays, including photography or process documentation.
• Written publications, such as essays, feature articles, or interviews.
• Curatorial projects, including physical or digital exhibitions.

Collaborative proposals are also welcome. Applicants should clearly acknowledge all collaborators and contributors and provide their details while submitting the application.
