KWI International Fellowships 2027 Programme

The KWI International Fellowship Programme invites applications from exceptional researchers worldwide working in the fields of humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences. The programme is designed for scholars whose research aligns with the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) research priorities and contributes to the institute’s interdisciplinary academic environment.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in the humanities, social sciences, or a related discipline and have up to six years of postdoctoral research experience (R2 level) under the European Framework for Research Careers. For the current fellowship cycle, applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in 2021 or later. Career interruptions, including those due to caregiving responsibilities or circumstances as an at-risk scholar, may be explained in the cover letter and will be considered during the eligibility assessment.

The fellowship is open to researchers from across the globe. German citizens are eligible only if they are currently affiliated with an international academic institution. Since the programme supports individual scholars, applications from research groups or teams are not accepted.

Selected fellows will receive a fellowship contract along with a monthly stipend of €3,000 (before tax) to help cover accommodation, insurance, and everyday living expenses. Partial reimbursement for travel to and from Essen may also be available. Additional travel costs, such as conference attendance, are expected to be covered from the fellowship allowance.

During the fellowship, KWI provides a comprehensive research environment that includes dedicated office space, modern facilities, library services, technical assistance, research and event management, as well as administrative and communication support.

Living in the Ruhr Area

Located in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr Area, the cities of Essen and Duisburg form part of one of Europe’s largest metropolitan regions, home to more than five million residents.

Formerly known for its industrial heritage, the Ruhr Area has transformed into a thriving centre for culture, education, and innovation. In 2010, the region—led by Essen—was recognised as the European Capital of Culture, highlighting its rich artistic and cultural landscape.

Today, the area offers a unique blend of museums, galleries, theatres, parks, and outdoor recreational spaces.
