Advancing education through clean cooking grants 2026 in Ethiopia

Advancing education through clean cooking grants 2026 in Ethiopia, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), through its Acceleration Facility, is inviting qualified organisations, project developers and technical service providers to develop and deliver an innovative school-based clean cooking pilot in Ethiopia.

The initiative will examine how clean cooking solutions in schools can generate high-quality carbon credits, creating an additional source of climate finance for education. At the same time, the programme aims to make schools healthier, safer and more environmentally sustainable.

The opportunity comes as traditional international development assistance for education faces increasing pressure, while climate finance continues to expand. By connecting these two areas, ECW aims to explore whether carbon finance can complement conventional education funding and help build more resilient education systems.

Ethiopia provides a strong setting for the pilot. Approximately 90% of the population lacks access to clean cooking solutions, while the country’s school feeding programme is expected to reach around 21 million children by 2027. Schools therefore offer an effective platform for deploying clean cooking technologies at scale.

The selected organisation or consortium will be responsible for designing and implementing the pilot, developing a strong monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system, and generating carbon credits in accordance with internationally recognised standards. The project is also expected to document lessons and evidence that can help shape future climate-finance models for education.

The pilot will run for two years and will be delivered in three stages. The initial phase will involve feasibility assessments and programme design, followed by implementation and carbon-credit generation. If the pilot demonstrates successful results, ECW plans to work with the selected partner to expand the programme to additional schools and assess opportunities to mobilise larger amounts of climate finance for education in Ethiopia and potentially other settings.

Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the full details and submit their applications before the specified deadline to seize this grant opportunity.
