Apply for Funding 2026 for Fact Checking and Verification Platforms Operating in Nigeria, The Fundación para la Internacionalización de las Administraciones Públicas (FIAP), in partnership with FactCheckAfrica, has launched a Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for fact-checking and verification platforms in Nigeria under the European Union (EU) Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project.

The initiative aims to enhance the technological capabilities, operational sustainability, and overall effectiveness of organisations dedicated to combating misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and other forms of information manipulation.

As part of this opportunity, one eligible organisation will be selected to receive technical assistance, capacity-building support, and financial assistance to develop, upgrade, implement, or expand technologies that strengthen fact-checking, verification, and information integrity initiatives.

The call is open to local, grassroots, and emerging organisations in Nigeria that operate digital platforms, websites, mobile applications, or other technology-based solutions focused on fact-checking, verification, and promoting reliable information. These organisations are especially encouraged to submit their expressions of interest.

Important: Due to budget limitations under the project, only one organisation will be selected through this call.

The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive package of support that includes:

  • A detailed technical assessment and audit of its existing digital platform
  • Customized technical assistance and capacity-building services
  • Support for technology upgrades, platform enhancement, and deployment
  • Assistance with the integration of AI-powered tools and automation solutions for fact-checking, verification, and monitoring
  • Improvements to user experience (UX/UI) and digital infrastructure
  • A grant of up to €4,094.65 to implement approved technology improvement activities

The type and extent of support will be determined after a technical needs assessment carried out by FactCheckAfrica.

Applications will be accepted only from organisations that satisfy all of the following eligibility requirements.

1. Organisational Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a legally registered organisation in Nigeria, such as an NGO, Civil Society Organisation (CSO), media house, or independent digital media organisation.
  • Have at least two years of operational experience in fact-checking, media verification, or monitoring disinformation.
  • Operate an active and publicly accessible website, mobile application, or online platform that is primarily used for fact-checking or combating misinformation and disinformation.
  • Not be subject to any national or international sanctions, debarments, or restrictions that prohibit participation in contracts or funding opportunities.
  • Be absent from European Union sanctions lists relating to anti-money laundering or terrorism financing.

2. Technical Eligibility

To qualify, organisations must:

  • Have an in-house technical professional or a formal arrangement with a technical service provider responsible for maintaining the platform.
  • Host their platform on a server or cloud infrastructure that allows technical modifications, upgrades, and improvements.

3. Thematic Eligibility

Applicants should also:

  • Demonstrate documented work in fact-checking or monitoring misinformation related to elections, political information, hate speech, public health, or similar thematic areas.
  • Show an existing presence or present a realistic strategy to reach at least three of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and inclusive practices in both platform content and outreach initiatives.

Eligible applications will be assessed using a 100-point scoring system based on the following criteria:

Quality, functionality, audience reach, and geographic coverage of the platform 20
Technical needs and readiness for support, including AI, automation, UX/UI, NLP, and infrastructure improvements 20
Organisational capacity, structure, and ability to manage digital initiatives 15
Geographic outreach and commitment to inclusion 10
Expected impact and clarity of proposed use of support 5
Total 100

Applicants must obtain at least 60 points to be considered for selection. If two or more organisations achieve the same score, preference will be given to those with stronger coverage in underserved geopolitical regions and greater potential for nationwide impact.

  • A summary of key technical challenges and priority areas where support is required (maximum 250 words)
  • Links to published fact-checks, verification reports, or similar work
  • Confirmation of willingness to participate in the technical assessment and platform enhancement process

Shortlisted organisations may also be requested to submit supporting documents, including registration certificates and other verification materials, during the evaluation stage.

Technical Assessment and Selection Process

Following the assessment process, one (1) organisation will be selected to receive technical assistance and grant funding based on overall scoring, technical readiness, organisational capacity, sustainability, and potential impact.
