The 2027 British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship offers a comprehensive package of academic, professional, and financial support, including:

Who Can Apply for the Application Window Open for British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship Opportunity 2026 offered by The University of Edinburgh?

Applications are invited from early-career researchers from Official Development Assistance (ODA)-eligible countries where the British Council operates.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Hold a doctoral degree at the time of application.
• Normally have completed their doctorate within the last seven years (between 2019 and summer 2026).
• If not yet formally graduated, provide evidence that all doctoral requirements have been completed, including successful completion of the viva examination and any required thesis corrections.
• Not have previously held a permanent academic position at a university.
• Not have previously received a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH).

Researchers with temporary, recurring, or short-term academic appointments are encouraged to apply. Applicants who have taken significant career breaks, including parental leave or time away from academia, may still be eligible. Such periods will not count toward the seven-year postdoctoral limit, although applicants should briefly explain the nature and duration of the break in their application.

The closing date for the receipt of the next round of applications (for visits from January 2027) will be 31 July 2026 at 17:00 BST. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. Decisions will be communicated in late September. Please ensure that you supply a valid email address so that you can be contacted quickly after decisions are made.

In addition to the application form, CV and research proposal, a cover letter outlining how the Fellowship will support the British Council’s objectives for this programme is required, as well as a minimum of two and a maximum of three confidential references.

Applicants should ask their referees to email their reference to the Director at iash@ed.ac.uk by the deadline. If references are not received by this date, your application cannot be considered.

Referees should comment on the nature and quality of the research proposal, as well as on the qualifications of the applicant. One referee should certify the successful viva (defence) and final examination of the candidate’s PhD thesis.
