The Reaching Home – Special Projects funding stream supports a broad range of initiatives designed to prevent homelessness and improve outcomes for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Eligible projects may focus on the following areas:
- Housing Support Services: Initiatives that help individuals obtain and sustain permanent housing, including housing search assistance, short-term rental support, housing placement services, and assistance with moving into and establishing a new home.
- Homelessness Prevention and Shelter Diversion: Programs that assist people who are at immediate risk of losing their housing or those transitioning from public institutions—such as hospitals, correctional facilities, or child welfare systems—to prevent them from entering emergency shelters or becoming homeless.
- Client Support Services: Activities that enhance overall well-being and housing stability, including access to food, clothing, essential supplies, employment and income support, healthcare coordination, treatment referrals, and community engagement programs.
- Capital Infrastructure Projects: Construction, renovation, or enhancement of shelters, transitional housing, supportive housing, and service facilities, along with resources that help individuals effectively access and benefit from these spaces.
- System Coordination and Data Improvement: Projects that strengthen collaboration among service providers, improve Coordinated Access systems, enhance the quality of Homeless Individuals and Families Information System (HIFIS) data, and support better planning, reporting, and performance evaluation.
All applications will be evaluated by the Community Advisory Board on Homelessness, which will recommend funding based on the Reaching Home Directives and the established assessment criteria.
The City of Yellowknife encourages eligible non-profit organizations with innovative projects that enhance the local homelessness response system to submit applications. All proposed initiatives must comply with the program’s eligibility requirements and funding guidelines.
