Apply for Research Grant Opportunity 2026 by Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), The EREF stands as one of the leading private funders of research in North America focused on sustainable materials management. Through its grants program, it has invested millions of dollars in innovative research initiatives, supporting institutions working to solve critical environmental and waste management challenges.

The grant evaluation process begins with the submission of a concise two-page pre-proposal that aligns with the priorities outlined in the Request for Proposals (RFP). These pre-proposals are initially assessed by EREF staff along with its Research Council—a panel of subject matter experts. Applicants whose pre-proposals are shortlisted are then invited to submit detailed full proposals.

Full proposals undergo a thorough review by both academic reviewers and industry experts. Based on these evaluations and discussions around the relevance and impact of the proposed research, the Research Council formulates funding recommendations. The final decision is made by EREF’s Board of Directors, which reviews these recommendations before awarding grants.

Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the full details and submit their applications before the specified deadline to seize this grant opportunity.

Overview of Apply for Research Grant Opportunity 2026 by Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF)

Sustainability has become a central focus across industries in the United States, with businesses, municipalities, and state governments setting ambitious targets—particularly in how waste is managed. In response, the EREF Board of Directors has prioritized aligning its funding strategy with a long-term vision that supports comprehensive and sustainable solid waste management practices.

EREF operates as an independent IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is among North America’s leading funders of solid waste research. It is governed by an elected Board of Directors, which sets policies, defines program priorities, and ensures that all funded initiatives align with the Foundation’s core mission and objectives.

Strategic Research Priorities Apply for Research Grant Opportunity 2026 by Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF)

To address key challenges in the sector, EREF has identified three major research priorities:

  • Climate Change Impacts & Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • Emerging Contaminants
  • Advancing Materials Circularity & Recycling

Each of these focus areas includes broader research gaps as well as specific topics where further investigation is encouraged.

Priority 1: Climate Change Impacts & Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The solid waste sector contributes to greenhouse gas emissions through both direct and indirect activities. EREF is interested in research that improves understanding, monitoring, and reduction of these emissions.

Key areas include:

  • Measuring and modeling greenhouse gas emissions, including improving accuracy and methodologies
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of direct measurement technologies and environmental factors affecting them
  • Comparing existing landfill emission models and developing improved predictive tools
  • Studying emission sources such as landfill hotspots and operational activities
  • Identifying strategies to reduce emissions through improved waste management practices
  • Assessing broader environmental impacts, including emissions linked to manufacturing and recycling processes

Priority 2: Emerging Contaminants

EREF broadly defines emerging contaminants to include substances such as PFAS, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, radioactive materials, and odor-related compounds. Research is encouraged to better understand their impact on the waste management sector and associated environmental and health risks.

Key areas include:

  • Impact of contaminants on waste processing systems like landfills, composting, and anaerobic digestion
  • Economic and operational challenges associated with managing contaminants such as PFAS
  • Environmental fate, transport, and exposure pathways of contaminants
  • Comparative analysis of contamination sources across industries
  • Measurement of contaminant levels across different waste streams and disposal methods

Priority 3: Advancing Materials Circularity & Recycling

The solid waste sector plays a critical role in enabling a circular economy by recovering and reusing materials. However, this transition involves environmental and economic trade-offs that require further research.

Key areas include:

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of policies such as extended producer responsibility and bottle deposit systems
  • Studying source-segregation policies and their impact on recycling outcomes
  • Assessing environmental trade-offs using lifecycle analysis
  • Understanding emissions linked to waste collection systems and fuel types
  • Identifying barriers and opportunities across the recycling value chain
