Eligibility Criteria for Application Open for Grant Opportunity 2026 for New Horizons for Seniors Program Community based projects Canada
Organizations whose primary mission is to support and serve seniors are strongly encouraged to apply for funding under the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).
Eligible Applicants
The following types of organizations may submit applications:
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Coalitions, networks, and ad hoc committees
- Municipal governments
- Research institutions and organizations
- Educational institutions, including universities, colleges, CEGEPs, and school boards/districts*
- Public health and social service organizations
- Indigenous organizations, including band councils, tribal councils, and self-governing entities
*Provincially or territorially funded educational institutions must obtain approval from the relevant provincial or territorial government.
Ineligible Applicants
- For-profit organizations
Project Requirements
To be considered for funding, projects must:
- Have a maximum duration of 52 weeks
- Request funding of up to $50,000
- Align with at least one NHSP program objective
- Involve seniors in a leadership role or as active participants in planning and delivery
- Demonstrate clear benefits for seniors and their communities
- Offer good value for money
Projects seeking capital assistance must address the capital assistance objective as well as at least one additional program objective. Funding for eligible capital expenses is limited to $25,000.
Eligible Activities
Projects should actively engage seniors and clearly outline planned activities at the time of application. Examples include:
- Sharing knowledge, skills, and experiences among seniors
- Raising awareness about elder abuse and financial abuse
- Developing resources and tools that benefit seniors
- Intergenerational and peer-learning initiatives
- Purchasing equipment required for senior-focused activities
- Renovating community spaces used for senior programming and social engagement
- Providing transportation that enables seniors to participate in eligible project activities
Ineligible Activities
Funding will not support:
- Activities unrelated to program objectives
- Projects where seniors are not the primary beneficiaries
- Initiatives with minimal senior involvement
- Tourism or leisure-focused projects
- Transportation solely for recreational outings
- Core healthcare service delivery
- Ongoing operational or fundraising activities
- Renovations to facilities not owned by the applicant
- Improvements to facilities that do not provide direct programming for seniors
Eligible Expenses
Funding may be used for reasonable costs directly connected to project implementation, including:
- Project administration costs (up to 25% of requested funding)
- Staff salaries and mandatory employment-related costs for project delivery
- Professional service fees, such as trainers, facilitators, and presenters
- Workshop and event expenses
- Project materials and supplies
- Honoraria
- Equipment purchases related to approved activities
- Building repairs or renovations directly supporting senior programming (up to $25,000)
Ineligible Expenses
The program does not fund:
- Regular organizational operating expenses
- Salaries unrelated to project activities
- Medical services or medical devices
- Purchase of vehicles, land, or buildings
- Alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, or similar products
- Renovations to buildings not owned by the applicant
- New construction or building expansions
- Beautification projects such as landscaping or decorative improvements
- Recreational travel without a clear social or educational purpose
- Grant writing or lobbying costs
- Any expenses incurred before the funding agreement is signed
Additional Notes
- Organizations with multiple locations may submit only one application per Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Business Number.
- Applicants in Québec may require provincial approval before accepting federal funding.
- Renovation projects must include at least one recent contractor quote dated within the past year.
- Applicants are encouraged to support Canadian businesses when purchasing goods and services for their projects.
How to apply?
Application Process
Applications must be submitted through the Grants and Contributions Online Services (GCOS) portal. Individuals who do not already have a GCOS account can create one before starting the application process.
Once an account has been set up, applicants can proceed with submitting their funding application without delay. After the application has been submitted, users will be required to complete the account verification and validation process to obtain full registration status and access the complete range of features and services available through the GCOS platform.
